Twitter Goes Down Affecting Millions of Users

By piranha

20th January 2016

On Tuesday morning, millions of people were left without access to Twitter as the social media site went down. Some users were able to log in but not send tweets and others were not able to get into account at all.

It was not only the desktop site which was affected but users of the mobile app were also unable to access the platform.

The problems were not just limited to the UK, but appeared to affect users all over the world. The Down Detector site suggested that the majority of reports were from the UK and other areas of Western Europe, with some users in the U.S also experiencing problems.

According to Twitter’s API status page, there were a number of problems reported throughout the night and a major outage occurred 19 hours before the site went down fully.

Visitors trying to log in to the site were met with a message saying; “Something is technically wrong. Thanks for noticing- we’re going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon.”

At around 8am, the site’s performance saw a significant drop and page stated that there was “service disruption.”

The company’s @Support account published a message saying that “Some users are currently experiencing problems accessing Twitter. We are aware of the issue and are working towards a resolution.” As users were unable to see this, Twitter sent it to The Independent in an attempt to communicate.

For the majority of users, the problems were resolved by the early afternoon but many still has trouble logging for several hours after this. Hopefully now that Twitter have addressed the problem, we won’t see the site going down again for a while!
