Twitter Expands Character Limit

By piranha

20th September 2016

The day that we have all been waiting for is finally here! Twitter has expanded its character limit and will no longer count photos, videos, GIFs and quoted tweets.

The character count will no longer be affected when attaching these types of media, meaning that you have more space to say what you want.  Before now, 24 characters would be automatically deducted from the limit when adding these types of media to posts.

Another great thing about the recent changes is that when you reply to a tweet with @username, this won’t be included in your character limit either!

Embedded photos and videos, like those that are hosted on YouTube, will still count towards your character limit, so you will need to keep this in mind if you want to include them.

In a tweet, the company said; “Say more about what’s happening! Rolling out now: photos, videos, GIFs, polls, and Quote Tweets no longer count toward your 140 characters.”

There is no doubt that Twitter has struggled to keep up with rival social media platforms, especially Facebook. Each month, 1.7 billon people log in to Facebook compared to just 313 million that are actively using Twitter.

The most recent update is yet another attempt to attract new users to the site, as well as keep the ones it already has, by making the network easier to use.

At the moment, the update is still being rolled out so don’t worry if you can’t see the changes just yet, you should be able to see them over the next few days.
