Tips for Growing Your Audience with Twitter Chats

As a business, you may think that it’s enough to be present on social media but there is much more to it. As well as finding interesting content to post, you also need to spend time interacting with your audience. If you don’t, you will find that social media doesn’t perform as well for you as it could!

Twitter Chats; What Are They?

A simple and effective way to grow your audience is using Twitter chats. If you haven’t heard of these before, they are conversations that take place on the platform using unique hashtags and topics. They take place at a specific time, for instance every Wednesday at 6pm. A great example of this is the #PrestonHour, which happens each Monday from 8-9pm. During this time, users can speak to others from the local area, whether it’s to offer advice, promote their business locally or just to meet new professionals in the area.

Why Should I Get Involved?

The main reason that you should get involved with twitter chats is that it is free exposure for your business. This opportunity to network will help you to increase your followers and because you have told them about your business, they are more likely to be valuable connections.

As well as connecting with potential customers, Twitter chats also give you the chance to share your knowledge and expertise. This not only gives potential customers confidence in what you do but also builds trust and authority within the industry.

It will only take up an hour or so, or longer if you decide to get involved with more than one Twitter chat, which really isn’t a lot of time to sacrifice! And if you find that you can’t commit to a certain time every week, one solution is to split the responsibility between your team.

Where to Find Twitter Chats

With so many Twitter chats out there, you may be unsure of how to find the right one to get involved with. The first place you can look is on the profiles of industry leaders and influencers. They will probably already be participating in these conversations and there is no reason that you can’t too! If this fails, ask your followers for recommendations, look on Facebook and LinkedIn Groups and keep an eye on hashtags that are trending.

Tips for Joining In

  • Prepare for any questions that might pop up. Researching the topic before your join in means that you can be confident that you know exactly what you’re talking about.
  • Speak to regulars and newcomers. Already know someone in the conversation? Don’t forget to say hi! If there is someone else you haven’t seen before, make them feel welcome.
  • Stand out from the crowd. If you choose a popular chat, there could be hundreds or even thousands of people getting involved. Images, gifs and graphics are a great way to get noticed.
  • Don’t forget the hashtag! The most important thing is not to forget the hashtag in your tweets. If you don’t include it, your tweets won’t be seen which is the whole point of joining in.

Host Your Own

Hosting your own Twitter chat is a great way to build authority within the industry. Before doing this, you will need to think about what your goals are and the theme of the conversation. You will then need to select a relevant hashtag, ensuring that it hasn’t already been claimed by someone else. Choose a time and date for the chat and then promote it as much as possible. It may take a while to get going but if you persevere, you should start to see more and more people getting involved!
