Many would have backed ‘The Olympics’ to be the top search term in the UK in 2012 but surprisingly, it was beaten by ‘Euro 2012’, according to recent figures released by Google.

According to the annual Google zeitgeist report, which lists 2012’s most searched-for terms, ‘Olympic Tickets’ came in second. Rio – host of the 2016 summer Olympics – was the most searched for travel destination with London proving the most popular searched-for city.

Whitney Houston, who passed away in February, was the most searched for person, followed by the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. Unsurprisingly, Skyfall was the top trending movie.

The results varied greatly from the results revealed recently by Google’s competitor, Bing. Their figures showed TV star Kim Kardashian topping its global list, followed by Justin Bieber. Kim Kardashian was also at the top of Yahoo’s most searched-for list.

According to Google, the most searched for Olympian was sprinter Usain Bolt, however, on Bing’s list, Bolt only came in at number nine, with LeBron James, Lolo Jones and Serena Williams making up its top three.

Topping the ‘what is’ search was ‘love’ followed by ‘icloud’ and ‘3G’. The ‘how to’ list showed that people are wanting to learn how to knit, crochet, draw, kiss and hack.
