Search returns bolstered by Twitter

Following an overhaul of its mobile properties, twitter is rolling out search functionality improvements which allow users to find historical posts on the network.

Until now, Twitter’s returns only showed tweets posted within the last seven days but once the updates are in place, users will be able to find posts dating back longer than a week.

According to Paul Burstein, search infrastructure engineer at Twitter, these updates will be rolled out over the next few days, with Twitter using a variety of methods to prioritise search results.

“We look at a variety of types of engagement, like favourites, retweets and clicks, to determine which tweets to show. We’ll be steadily increasing this percentage over time and ultimately, aim to surface the best content for your query,” he says.

This roll out follows the introduction earlier in the week of an update to the iOS and Android versions of its mobile apps, along with its mobile site, aimed at improving how users find content, as well as how search results are displayed.

Twitter product management director Esteban Kozak says “Search results now surface the most relevant mix of Tweets, photos and accounts, all in one stream. We’ve also added a new search button to Twitter for iPhone, letting you search from anywhere within the app.”
