Mobile-Friendly Websites Get a Boost on Google Search Results

Just two months ago, Google made an announcement saying that it would be changing the way its search results work. On Tuesday they rolled out a brand new algorithm, making these plans a reality.

Websites that aren’t considered mobile-friendly will now be ranked lower on the search engine’s results. These changes will only be shown to users who are accessing the web through a mobile device.

The search engine company has said that it will focus on individual pages rather than websites. This means that a site that is not completely mobile-friendly could still be ranked highly because some of its pages are.

Criteria for the new algorithm include text size, space between links and how the content is spread across the screen. You can analyse your website and find out if it passes the mobile-friendly criteria using Google’s online test.

Google don’t want users to have to zoom, scroll and focus when accessing sites from their mobile. The new algorithm will hopefully encourage site owners to change their site and improve the experience for users across the globe.

The firm announced the release on their blog, saying; “Today’s the day we begin globally rolling out our mobile-friendly update. Now searchers can more easily find high-quality and relevant results where text is readable without tapping or zooming, tap targets are spaced appropriately, and the page avoids unplayable content or horizontal scrolling.”

Websites that are penalised by Google could find that the traffic to their sites drop dramatically. This will undoubtedly affect the sales and profits of many businesses.

If you want to make sure that this doesn’t happen to you, it is essential to make your site responsive as soon as possible. Speak to a member of the Piranha team to find out how we can help to make your website mobile-friendly!
