Marketing on YouTube – are you getting it right?

One common mistake that many businesses make is uploading videos to the platform without thinking about copyright and other legislation. Not only could this result in your content being taken down but you could even face being taken to court.

Later we will look at why video marketing is so important but first, let’s take a look at 3 ways to ensure your videos comply with YouTube’s terms of service.

1. People shouldn’t have to pay to watch your content

As a business, one of the most important things is making money. You may think an easy way to do this is by charging customers to watch your YouTube videos.

However, when you sign up to the video streaming platform, you are required to agree to their terms and conditions. In these, they say “You shall not copy, reproduce, distribute, transmit, broadcast, display, sell, license, or otherwise exploit any Content for any other purposes without the prior written consent of YouTube or the respective licensors of the Content.”

If you are insistent on selling your content, you will need to contact YouTube for permission but the chances of them allowing this is very slim. Alternatively, you can upload your video to YouTube and then embed it onto another paid-for platform or think about hosting your videos on a different platform entirely.

One other thing to consider is that, as well as charging to watch your content, you also aren’t allowed to sell advertising space on your videos. YouTube has their own advertising service, so obviously they aren’t going to be very happy if you start stealing their profits!

2. Get permission for any music used

Your video is finished and ready to be uploaded to YouTube, but have you secured permission for the music you’ve used? Unless you have made it yourself, you will need to get permission to use it from the artist.

What happens if I don’t get permission? YouTube may mute the sound in your video, meaning that anyone watching must view it in silence. This obviously isn’t the best if you are trying to tell a story, sell your products or introduce your company.

Your account may also be suspended, and this could be either temporarily or permanently. If you have been adding content your account for many months or years, having it closed down means that you will lose your following and your customer service will take a hit.

If a musician notices that you have used their track without asking, you may be in a lot more trouble than losing your account. They have the right to take you to court and will probably result in your paying a hefty fine.

3. Don’t steal content from others

YouTube has a special tool called ContentID that goes through millions of videos to find the ones that are violating copyright. As mentioned above, the site takes this very seriously and could ban you from using the service or you could face more serious problems like a court battle.

The best way to avoid copyright infringement is to create original and unique content for your business every single time. If you need to use someone else’s images, music or video clips, be sure to get written permission before uploading your video to YouTube.
