Instagram Launches ‘Stories’ Feature

4th August 2016

Since it was first launched in 2010, Instagram has become one the most popular social media platforms in the world. Each month, more than 500 million people log in to the site and around 95 million photos and videos are shared each day.

This week, the Facebook-owned company launched a brand new feature which allows users to share a series of pictures in a slideshow format, and even add text, drawings and emojis to the photos if they want to.

In a blog post, Instagram said; “With Instagram Stories, you don’t have to worry about overposting. Instead, you can share as much as you want throughout the day — with as much creativity as you want. You can bring your story to life in new ways with text and drawing tools. The photos and videos will disappear after 24 hours and won’t appear on your profile grid or in feed.”

“You’ll see stories from people you follow in a bar at the top of your feed — from your best friends to your favourite popular accounts. When there’s something new to see, their profile photo will have a colourful ring around it.”

In order to view someone’s story, all you need to do is tap on their profile photo. You can then navigate through the story by tapping the screen to go backwards or forwards. If you want to move onto someone else’s story, simply swipe across.

One thing that is different to usual posts on the platform is that if you want to say something about the story, you will need to message them privately via Instagram Direct as there is no public comment functionality.

For those who are worried about privacy, there are things that you can do to ensure that not everyone can see your Instagram Stories. If your account is private, only your followers will be able to see these particular posts. There is also the option to hide Stories from anyone that you don’t want to see them.

Instagram’s recent move has already been criticised by many users and experts, as it is very similar to the features that are available on the photo sharing app Snapchat. But one thing to remember is that Snapchat is doing extremely well, meaning that these features could become just as popular with Instagram users in the future.
