Google to Boost Mobile-Friendly Websites in Search Results

Is your website mobile-friendly? If the answer is no, you could find yourself penalised on search engine results.

From April 21st, Google will take into consideration the mobile-friendliness of website before deciding where they appear in terms of rankings.

After this date, sites that can be accessed from different mobile devices will appear higher in search results than those that can’t.

In its announcement yesterday, Google said that the new changes will be applied to search results worldwide and will “have a significant impact” on the site.

They are hoping to make it “easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.”

In addition, Google will begin to use information from indexed apps as a factor in page ranking for signed in users who have the app installed. This means content from these apps may start to appear in search results more often.

If you have followed Google over the past year, you will know that this isn’t the first time they have encouraged people to invest in mobile-friendly sites. In November, they added a ‘mobile-friendly’ tag to all websites on its search results that could be accessed through these devices.

In the UK alone, millions of people access the internet through mobile devices each day. From this it is clear that having an accessible site is essential, especially if you own a business.

According to the Office for National Statistics, 74% of adults in the UK bought goods online last year. This means that you could be losing potential custom if your website isn’t mobile friendly!

With over two months’ notice before the changes come into action, Google hopes that people will take the opportunity to make necessary improvements to their website.
