Google has announced it is introducing free listings on its popular Google Shopping tab.
While paid listings will remain and operate as usual, advertisers will be able to register for free ad slot eligibility. It will then be up to Google to select participating retailers to be shown on the shopping tab, displayed on search results pages (SERPs).
This change is initially being introduced in the United States only. However, Google has announced it will be expanded worldwide by the end of 2020. By next year, retailers right across Britain will be enjoying free advertising space on the world’s largest search engine.

Already Using Merchant Centre?
If you are an existing user of Merchant Centre and Shopping ads, you may already be eligible for free advertising when the system is live in the United Kingdom. In this case, no further steps are necessary.
The following steps may be required if you have not previously opted into the correct criteria:
- Navigate to your Merchant Centre dashboard.
- Select “Growth and then “Manage Programs” on the left-hand menu.
- Select the “Surfaces Across Google” program card to opt in.
Not Using Merchant Centre Yet?
If you are not currently using Google Merchant Centre, now is the perfect time to get started. This platform is designed to display your products to users via the shopping tab on Google’s SERPs.
It could not be easier to ensure you are eligible to be considered for free advertising space on the shopping tab. Simply set up a Google Merchant Centre account and be sure to opt in to the “Surfaces Across Google” option.
