Google Announces January 2020 Core Update

By piranha

13th January 2020

Google has today, January 13th, confirmed that a core algorithm update is being rolled out and it’s simply being titled ‘January 2020 Core Update’.

Being a broad core update, this will impact all search results on a global scale and won’t be an update that targets a specific sector or element that webmasters can try and fix. The last core update was in September 2019 and it was one that, according to webmasters and SEOs, didn’t have as big an impact as previous core updates.

Google did release an update in November but that wasn’t a core update, it was a specific update focusing on local SEO, you can read more about that here.

If you find that you’re hit by this update, Google has given some advice on what you should consider looking at. These aren’t specific actions to take in order to try and recover and in fact, if you have been negatively impacted, it might not be specifically about what you’re doing wrong with your website. It might just be down to what your competitors are doing well.

Here is the advice from Google about what webmasters should know about Google’s Core Update.

Google actually released a great analogy explaining how the core updates work and how you, as a webmaster or SEO, should perhaps look at them.

“One way to think of how a core update operates is to imagine you made a list of the top 100 movies in 2015. A few years later in 2019, you refresh the list. It’s going to naturally change. Some new and wonderful movies that never existed before will now be candidates for inclusion. You might also reassess some films and realize they deserved a higher place on the list than they had before.”

What you should take away from this is that just because you’ve been overtaken by a competitor or a newer website, it doesn’t mean that your site is bad. There are going to be widespread effects from this so it’s worth keeping an eye on your rankings in the coming days and weeks.

If your rankings do drop, look at what is now ranking ahead of you and look at how you can update your content to better reflect what a searcher might want to see from you and your content.
