Firefox trades-in Google for Yahoo

Yahoo has recently taken on a deal with Mozilla, which has made them the default search engine for Firefox users. Instead of being greeted by the familiar face of Google when connecting to the web, users will now instead land on Yahoo’s search engine page.

Yahoo’s president, Marissa Mayer, has said that the company “believe deeply in search. It’s an area of investment and opportunity for us. It’s also a key growth area for us,” Mayer said. “This partnership helps to expand our reach in search and gives us an opportunity to work even more closely with Mozilla to find ways to innovate in search, communications and digital content.”

StatCounter, which is a website analytics company, found that Yahoo was used three times more on the new version of Firefox, compared to the 33 version.

In their report issued on the 2nd December, it stated that the number of users who used Google through Firefox dropped from 82.14% to 62.46%. Bing also saw a slight decrease, with the total users dropping from 6.45% to 5.81%.

Yahoo made a significant increase in its users, jumping from 9.64% to 29.40%.

Aodhan Cullan, the CEO of StatCounter, has said, “At the moment the change is having a negligible impact on overall search share in the U.S., but if this early usage trend on Firefox 34 continues, then Yahoo could be on course to gain a number of percentage points.”

With Firefox 34 still being in its early stages, these figures could increase in the coming weeks. It will take a lot of work to knock Google of the top spot and only time will tell if Yahoo is destined to be the next big thing!
