Facebook to Show More Content from Friends

23rd April 2015

On Tuesday, Facebook announced that it will be making changes to the content shown on the social media platform.

The updated algorithm will control which posts, photos and videos are shown in a user’s News Feeds.

It will decide what content to show you by looking at the profiles you  visit and who you speak to most on the site. Stories from these users will take priority over company pages and other connections.

Users will still be able to see posts from other people in their network, but these will appear lower down on the News Feed.

In a recent blog post, the company said that, “If you like to read news or interact with posts from pages you care about, you will still see that content in News Feed. This update tries to make the balance of content the right one for each individual person.”

As part of these changes, the site will stop showing as many stories that have been liked or commented on by friends. This is something that Facebook has received much criticism for, as most people don’t want to be spammed with notifications for a story they aren’t interested in.

Facebook has also relaxed the restrictions on showing multiple posts by the same person. This means that users “who don’t have a lot of content available to see” will be able to see more stories in their News Feed.

With the site prioritising content from friends, business pages will face a reduced visibility on the social media site. Facebook has warned that the “impact of these changes on your page’s distribution will vary considerably depending on the composition of your audience and your posting activity. In some cases, post reach and referral traffic could potentially decline.”

Businesses will need to write interesting and engaging content if they want to make sure that visitors still visit their Facebook page. To find out more about our copywriting services, please visit our website or contact us today by emailing Sharon@piranha-solutions.com
