Facebook Newsfeeds Are Changing……Again!

By piranha

6th February 2018

Anyone who uses social media, be it for business or personal use, will know just how much the platform changes. In the last year, we have seen the introduction of new camera features, stricter rules for fake news and more recently, adverts within Messenger.

In its latest attempt to improve the service for users, Facebook is beginning to prioritise content from friends and family, over businesses.

The social media giant wants to push content that sparks conversations, rather than pushing salesy content to users.

In a post on his personal Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg said that he hopes the changes will “encourage meaningful social interactions with family and friends over passive consumption. As a result, you’ll see less public content, including news, video, and posts from brands.”

“After this change, we expect news to make up roughly 4% of News Feed — down from roughly 5% today. This is a big change, but news will always be a critical way for people to start conversations on important topics.”

What does this mean for businesses?

Facebook has admitted that businesses will probably see the impressions of their posts drop over the next few weeks.

This means that any business that wants to ensure its posts are still visible will probably have to pay for advertising at some point in the future.

After all, advertising is the main revenue for Facebook, so it will try to push this as much as possible!

Could this be a good thing?

Although it seems like the algorithm could be a bad thing for businesses, in fact, it could be positive! Facebook is making these changes to ensure that people keep using the platform. If your customers aren’t using Facebook, what’s the point of your company being on there?

Another thing is, Facebook hasn’t actually said it will stop showing your content. It is penalising content that isn’t engaging with its audience. This means that if you are creating content that is interesting, your posts shouldn’t be affected.
