Facebook Messenger to Introduce Selling Robots

13th April 2016

After months of rumours, Facebook has finally confirmed that it is introducing sales robots to its Messenger service.

At the F8 conference yesterday, they announced the release of the new chatbot software, which will allow customers to speak to Facebook robots. This will be useful for customers that need help or advice and will also offer great advertising opportunities to businesses.

The chatbots will have an understanding of certain phrases, so that it can answer any questions accurately, much like a human customer service representative. Using this service, you will be able to enquire about a product, get a weather forecast or even order a pizza.

The main aim of the Messenger platform is to allow businesses to build better relationships with their customers. If you haven’t bought from a company in a while, their robots will send you a sponsored message about products and deals that they are offering.

These businesses will have to pay for this service, much like its sponsored posts. Advertising is the main revenue for Facebook and offering a paid robot service is just one of the many ways that they are trying to boost their finances.

There will be some limits to how the sponsored posts work. Businesses using this service will only be able to contact existing customers or those who have been in contact with them before.

If users don’t like the messages that they are seeing, they can block certain companies from ever contacting them in the future.

In a blog post, Facebook said;

“Over the past year as we’ve been expanding what people can do on Messenger, we’ve been laser focused on creating the best and most engaging experiences.”

“Part of this effort has been partnering with a few businesses to build deeper interactions with their customers on Messenger in a way that is contextual, convenient, and delightful, with control at its core.”

“We’re excited to introduce bots for the Messenger Platform. Bots can provide anything from automated subscription content like weather and traffic updates, to customized communications like receipts, shipping notifications, and live automated messages all by interacting directly with the people who want to get them.”
