Facebook May Stop Displaying Likes

For years, likes on Facebook has been used as a very visible way of assessing public approval on pages.

They’ve been displayed on your page for years, whether you’re a global celebrity, a local business or anything in between. But according to a recent blog on meetedgar.com, that might all be about to change.

For many people using Facebook, the number of likes your page has is the most obvious way of measuring popularity and social approval.

However, Facebook may stop this information from being displayed at all. There are a number of reasons why they might be considering this;

  • It’s difficult for Facebook to tell which likes are genuine
  • Likes from fake sources or profiles number in the hundreds of millions
  • It’s impossible for users to tell which likes are or aren’t genuine

All this means that buying and selling Facebook likes from fraudulent companies has become a multi-million-pound industry.

This is exactly the kind of controversy from which Facebook is actively distancing itself, especially after recent accusations that it didn’t do enough to stem to influx of fraudulent news stories in the run-up to the US election.

At present, it’s clear that Facebook is not deleting or resetting likes. However, neither are they being displayed for some users.

Facebook is currently experimenting with these changes, and we’ll have to wait and see if this will be made permanent across the board. But whether they decide to keep these changes or not, it’s clear that likes are perceived as less reliable than before.

This will undoubtedly result in a shift in how public approval is perceived on the social media giant, perhaps giving more weight to user-shared posts and articles.
