Facebook Makes Changes to Stop Ad Blocking Software

If you have ever been on the social media platform Facebook, you may have noticed adverts showing up on your Timeline. This can be annoying, especially if they are irrelevant or appear too much, so it is no wonder that millions of people are choosing to use ad blocking software.

In an attempt to combat this, the company has made changes that will force users accessing Facebook through their desktop into seeing the ads, even if they have ad blocking software installed.

Facebook gets the majority of its revenue from advertising, with £4.7bn being made in the most recent quarter alone.

If people continue using ad blocking and adverts aren’t seen on the site it could be off-putting for companies paying for advertising, which is why Facebook are so determined to put ad blocking software to a stop once and for all.

At the moment, users can choose to hide an advert by clicking the “x” in the corner. Facebook has promised to improve these tools so that users see a more relevant selection of ads, depending on the brands, companies and pages that we like.

Andrew Bosworth, the company’s advertising vice-president, said in a blog post; “As we offer people more powerful controls, we’ll also begin showing ads on Facebook desktop for people who currently use ad blocking software.”

Earlier this month, Facebook also said that it would be cracking down on the number of clickbait stories on the site. It claims that it wants to give more control back to users but with around 200 million people currently using ad blocking software, the latest move could cause quite a stir.

Do you think it is a good or bad thing that the social media giant is taking steps to prevent ad blocking software? Let us know your thoughts on Facebook or Twitter!
