Facebook Launches “Messenger Day” Feature

13th March 2017

If you have logged onto Facebook over the weekend, which let’s face it most of us have, you may have noticed a new feature. The social media platform has added “Messenger Day”, which allows you to share parts of your day with your friends.

The feature is very similar to Snapchat Stories, in the sense that you can add filters and effects to your photo. Like Snapchat, your message will also disappear from the site after 24 hours.

Filters that are available include “who’s up for?” and ‘active now’ indicators, which will help users to find friends to connect and meet up with.

However, one difference is that Snapchat limits your stories to 10 seconds, whereas Facebook’s Messenger Day lets you send 15 second messages.

It’s not only Facebook that has been following in Snapchat’s footsteps. Recently, Instagram launched Geostickers for users in New York City and Jakarta, Indonesia.

In a blog post, Facebook said “We began testing a way for you to share these photos and videos — as they happen — by adding to your Messenger Day, where many of your friends can view and reply to them.”

“You’re always in control of who can see your day — share it with everyone, or choose specific friends and family members on Messenger. Since everything you add disappears after 24 hours, feel free to add as often as you want.”

“Millions of people around the world have already used Messenger Day to show what they’re doing, how they’re feeling and to invite friends to join them for activities — or just to chat.”

How do I use the new feature?

  • Open the Messenger app and click on the camera button that is highlighted with a sun. Alternatively, you can tap the “add to your day button” at the top of your inbox.
  • This will open your camera, where you can take a quick selfie or a photo or video of your surroundings.
  • If you want to add a filter or effects, tap on the smiley face in the top right and add your photo. You also have the option to add text to your image video by clicking on the “Aa” icon.
  • Once you are happy with how the image looks, click on the arrow in the bottom right corner. You can then choose to add it to your day, save it to your phone or send directly to a certain friend or group of users.
