Facebook is Cracking Down on Fake News

Whether it’s exciting new features on the platform or quarterly revenues, Facebook never stays out of the limelight for long.

This week, it has been reported that “more than dozens” of Facebook employees have joined together in an unofficial task force to combat fake news on the site.

In an article, BuzzFeed said; “At the moment, they are meeting in secret, to allow members of the group to speak freely and without fear of condemnation from senior management. The group plans to formalise its meetings and eventually make a list of recommendations to Facebook’s senior management.”

“Another Facebook employee said while the task force remained small, “hundreds” of Facebook employees had expressed dissatisfaction with the company’s stance on fake news in private online chats, and wanted to support efforts to challenge that position.”

Since the election, where fake news stories were said have played a part in the election results, the company has added fake news to its list of banned adverts. This means that fake news companies can’t create paid ads on the network, although they can still post content on the platform.

But it’s not just Facebook that’s been in the firing line for fake news. Search giant Google has also received criticism for it and have vowed to take steps to tackle the problem.

As well as its current “fact check” label, Google is also working on a new policy update that will clamp down on abuse on its AdSense advertising platform.

Their spokeswoman Andrea Faville commented on the plans, saying; “We will restrict ad serving on pages that misrepresent, misstate, or conceal information about the publisher, the publisher’s content, or the primary purpose of the web property.”
