Facebook Mobile Messenger Adds Video Feature

Last Monday, Facebook released a video calling feature to their messenger service. This means that can now have a face-to-face conversation with your friends and family on the social media platform.

The new feature is available to mobile users who are accessing messenger through the iOS or Android app. Desktop users are already able to make video calls to their friends via the Facebook site.

There will be a small window onscreen where users will be able to see themselves. There is also an option for audio calling, which means that users can make a voice call to their friends without having to pay.

The main difference between this and other video calling services like FaceTime is that you can call any of your contacts, even if one person is using Android and the other iOS.

In its announcement, Facebook said, “Video calling will expand Messenger’s real-time communication features, enabling the more than 600 million people who use Messenger every month to reach others wherever they are, from anywhere. It’s fast, reliable and high quality.”

“Video calling in Messenger is available for calls made from a mobile phone to another mobile phone, even if one person is on iOS and the other person is on an Android device.”

This isn’t the first time that Facebook has offered a video calling to users. Back in 2011, the company teamed up with Skype to bring a video service to the site. This time, they didn’t want to rely on a 3rd party so decided to venture alone!

The video messaging service is currently available to users in the following countries: Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, France, Greece, Ireland, Laos, Lithuania, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, the UK and the U.S. It is thought that the feature will be rolled out to the rest of the world over the next couple of months.
