Facebook Adds Profile Videos for Mobile Users

Since it was first founded in 2004, Facebook has become the most popular social networking site in the world. Each month, the platform attracts an impressive 1.49 billion active users from across the globe.

On Wednesday, the company announced that it would be releasing a new feature that will allow users to set a 7 second looping video, which is essentially a GIF, as their main profile picture.

In its Newsroom, Facebook said; “On News Feed and profiles, we’re seeing people create and view more videos than ever before. Today we’re starting to test the next step in an obvious evolution of profiles: profile videos. Soon, you’ll be able to film a short, looping video clip that will play for anyone who visits your profile. Profile videos will let show a part of yourself you couldn’t before, and add a new dimension to your profile.”

Users are also able to set a temporary photo as their profile image to celebrate certain events, which will revert back to your previous photo after a certain date. This comes after the success of the “Celebrate Pride feature” which more than 26 million people used to show their support.

The company suggests that there are 1.31 billion monthly users accessing the site from a mobile device. With this in mind, it’s no wonder that they are doing everything possible to improve the service for mobile.

The feature is now available to mobile users throughout the UK and California, with the rest of the world following soon. It is unclear whether profile videos will be added for desktop users at a later date but as more people are now accessing the site from mobiles, it seems unlikely.
