Are You Making the Most of Twitter?

Here at Piranha, we love a good Tweet. Nowadays, almost everyone has a Twitter account, though some see a lot more love than others. From the unusual to the frankly baffling, there’s a lot of accounts out there that might put you off getting a Twitter profile for your business, but we’re here to show you the other side of the coin.

There are companies out there using Twitter, and using it well, to raise brand awareness, earn customer loyalty, and get that all-important traffic to their site. Take Oreo as a good example – their Superbowl Tweet was inspired, and the benefits of that don’t just come in Retweets and Favourites – they garnered mainstream news attention too. All that free publicity, and all it took them was a good idea and a few minutes work. If that doesn’t make you want a piece of the Twitter pie, nothing will.

But how do you actually get in on the action? Well, like any business decision, you don’t just jump in feet first. You need to know what you’re actually hoping to achieve with a Twitter account. Are you looking to promote your products? Develop your brand image? Or are you going to be using it to answer your users’ questions and complaints? All of these are valid goals, and it’s down to you to figure out your priorities before you get started.

Next comes the branding. A Twitter account with no cover image and a default profile photo could almost do more harm than good. You’ve got a brand image, a logo, a snazzy website you invested heavily in – don’t let your Twitter account, or indeed any of your social channels, let you down. Properly designed and produced graphics will go a long way towards making your account look as professional as your business is.

Finally, once you’re up and running, there’s the management to consider. Who’s in charge of keeping the account updated? Answering your customers Tweets and sharing your own news with the world? Again, it’s important to keep your goals and brand at the forefront – don’t go down the slippery slope of using your Twitter account for personal updates. Keep it professional, and relevant to your audience, or you’ll soon lose their interest.
